How to Manage Compassion Fatigue in Caregiving – with Shirley Ramey

www.mauigrowntherapies.com

Shirley Ramey, LPN, is a Healing Touch provider who has spent the last 25 years as a nurse. She works with the Veterans Administration here on Maui and the mainland and with Hospice here at home. During this time she developed a program “I.C.A.R.E.“ ( I Create A Restorative Experience) to fill a need which supports a caregiver providing tools for those who are caring for a family member or loved one with a chronic health condition (i.e., CPOD, Congestive Heart Failure, etc.)

In the current climate of providing home care, it has traditionally been a family member or loved one who is the primary caregiver for the individual who is in hospice or has a long-term chronic health condition. Statistically, the care partner has minimized their own well-being due to the focus of providing care. The I. C.A.R.E. program is vital for providing an integrative approach to facilitate care for all.

Healing Touch is a modality used in the hospital setting mainly by nurses. It aids with energy realignment for overall well being through proper self-care, mindfulness, journaling and a variety of healing activities for the caregiver.

Shirley’s goal for this presentation is to help caregivers avoid poor health and burnout. She will share tools vital for a successful integrative approach focusing on the caregiver’s stress reduction and calming anxiety while balancing their emotional well-being.
