Akakū Upstairs Presents: Matthew Thayer, Photojournalist / Author –

Matthew Thayer has been a photojournalist at the Maui News for 38 years and still going strong. He’s had his eye on daily life here on Maui including local sports, community activities and special events around the island. He has also reported on bell-weather events like the “miracle landing” of Aloha Airlines Flight 243 and the end of commercial sugar cane on Maui.

When he’s not chasing the next scoop, Thayer can  often be found working on his next novel. Last fall he released the fifth book in his adventure series, “30,000 B.C. Chronicles.” His novels chart the adventures and tribulations of survivors of a time travel science expedition shipwrecked in Paleolithic Europe. The books are available digitally on Amazon.
Thayer’s work in The Maui News has won more than 75 state and national awards. His photos and stories have appeared in publications worldwide.

Matthew will share highlights of his career, including the story of his coverage of the “miracle landing” of Aloha Flt. 243.
