As a community-based non-profit agency, Akakū develops collaborative relationships with other non-profit community-based organizations, government agencies and educational institutions to leverage local resources and serve diverse interests throughout Maui County.
Since the inception of TV coverage for the Maui County Council, Akakū has regularly videotaped and cablecast selected meetings of the County Council and its committees and legislative events on Akakū channel 53. Akakū has installed a fully functional remote-controlled, multi-camera video recording studio system and ancillary systems (graphics, captioning & fiber optic cable transmitters) in the County building for cablecast of the County Council meetings.
Akakū cablecasts “live” from the Maui County Council Chamber on the eighth floor of the County Building. Coverage of the Maui County Council meetings is a joint endeavor of Maui County Council Office of Council Services and Akakū. The purpose is to increase public awareness and knowledge of county government and to encourage greater citizen participation in the local decision making process.
Akakū also provides videotaped coverage of off-site County Council meetings. Akaku provides taped coverage of some of Maui County Board and Commissions meetings. All covered Maui County meetings are available online through our video on demand tab.
