The opening of Akakū's Lana'i Media Center has made it possible to better serve the entire Maui County and feature programs about life on Lana'i. The Lanai Media Center currently offers certification classes in Camera and Editing, each at a cost of $40 per class. For those in financial need we offer a discount on this price. The center is equipped with the following gear with 2 Sony HD1000u High Definition Camera packages which include, tripods, microphones and Apple iMac G5 Computers with Final Cut Pro and internet access.
We encourage Lanai community members to take advantage of the camera and editing certification classes and the media tools offered. Share your stories and creativity with the other islands. We also accept any videos that you have already made and would like to have aired (hunting, opinion, documentary, etc). Open Mics/Hot Sets are also available for community members. Both are free of charge and provide an opportunity for all residents of Maui County to speak in front of a camera on any topic of their choosing. There are some restrictions regarding "calls to action" and the mention of money.
Akaku is seeking to work with other non-profit organizations to fulfill some of their video needs - through camera and editing classes or by creating short video tours on what their organizations stand for and what services they provide.
Akaku has been able to provide video production training with the Lanai High School and Middle School.
